Apple not updating last generation Apple TVs

The big question has been answered. Apple will not be updating their last two versions of the Apple TV with the new operating system that they announced yesterday. The paradigm shift from downloads to streaming seems to be on hold for the now legacy device. According to Ars Technica, Apple doesn’t not plan on releasing Netflix streaming or other software features in the older device.

The new Apple TV, being rental only, obviously means downloads won’t be available on the new device, but it doesn’t make much sense in reverse, does it? It might be a case of the new system having a different hardware architecture than the old one, moving from an Intel Pentium M chipset to an A4 chipset, but that’s just a guess.

So, if you’re hoping to save a couple of dollars by just updating your old Apple TV, you’re out of luck. The good news is that it’s a lot cheaper this time around for you.
