Google Play Gift Cards Coming Soon?

Google Play, Google’s app, music, video and book marketplace for Android, will soon start to offer gift cards. Evidence of this was found in a leaked Google Play 3.8.15 apk. In the photo above you can view the giftcard redemption screen where users can type in the gift card code and apply credit to their accounts. This credit can then be used to buy media via the Google Play store. As of now, there is no word on where these cards will be sold but we can expect them to pop up at popular retail stores.

The leaked apk also shows new Wishlist functionality. Users will be able to add content to their wishlist; however, there doesn’t seem to be a way to share your wishlist or let others send you gifts. As of right now, Google Play’s wishlist seems more like a cart to me; however, this could change before the Google Play store is actually updated.

Personally, I think that Google Play giftcards will be a big hit for kids and preteens who own Android devices as most don’t have access to a credit or debit card to purchase apps and content. Plenty of kids use iTunes cards, so I have a feeling the same will transfer over to Android.
