Facebook Pulls “Find Friends Nearby”
Yesterday Facebook added a new feature to their Facebook app under the name ‘Find Friends Nearby’. This feature, when enabled, allowed users to share their location data with friends so they could be located at all times. This feature was available for use for around 24 hours until it was pulled today (June 25, 2012). When ABC News asked Facebook about why this feature was pulled, a spokesperson at Facebook responded with the following statement:
This wasn’t a formal release — this was something that a few engineers were testing. With all tests, some get released as full products, others don’t. Nothing more to say on this for now — we’ll communicate to everyone when there is something to say.
While I find it odd that Facebook would push a feature that “only a few engineers were testing” to the general public, stranger things have happened. And while I think this would be a cool addition to Facebook for some mobile users, I wouldn’t use it. In fact, I don’t even use ‘Find My Friends’, an app developed by Apple — it’s too much of a battery drain and I would rather not have my friends know where I am at all times. What do you think about “Find Friends Nearby”?
