Do you like iOS notifications but aren't a fan of the interface? Well, now you can fix that with MiniBanners, a jailbreak tweak for iOS. This tweak makes the notification bars smaller, thus using less screen real estate.
MiniBanners is also completely customizable. With MiniBanners, you can customize the colors, fonts, and many other aspects of the notification bar. This is great if you often use custom themes that don't work well with Apple's standard notification banners.
At first, MiniBanners will only show the app's name as well as the notification count. ... more
We all know about Growl -- it's been a vital part of many of our workflows for years. Now that Apple has implemented Notification Center on OS X, the once nigh-on mandatory install of Growl is less useful for Mac users. Well, many apps still use Growl for notifications, and they haven't been updated to work with Notification Center yet. Similarly, Growl intends on integrating eventually, but there is no need to wait now.
MountainGrowl is a free and open source plug-in for Growl that integrates Growl notifications ... more
This is the kind of story we all like to hear about. When Peter Hajas got sick and tired of the way Apple's iOS notification system worked, rather than complain about it online, he decided to fix it. Peter designed and built a complete replacement for the iOS notification system, and made it available to all jailbroken iPhone users via the Cydia downloads app.
His replacement, known as Mobile Notifier, has been featured all over the web in videos and various blog posts. Apparently, Apple's iOS team has discovered his work, ... more
We can all pretty much agree that iOS notifications are pretty useless in their current state. But, rest assured, Apple seems to be working on ways to get them to provide more utility. According to a new patent dug up by AppleInsider, Apple is working on dynamic alerts for calendar events.
These alerts would be able to determine travel time from your current location to a calendar event in iCal, and provide you with an alert telling you to bust-a-move before you're late for that oh so important meeting ... more
It shouldn't come as much of a surprise when I say that Apple's notification system needs a lot of work. I spend more time these days cursing notifications than I do using them. It also shouldn't be much of a surprise that Apple knows exactly what we're thinking about the notifications. Heck, they're probably thinking the same thing. Over the last year they've hired WebOS talent to address the notification problems. But, I'd like to state publicly that they should hire Robin Raszka. He just solved notifications on ... more
Notificant by Carmel Cloud is a cloud-based notification application for your Mac. What makes it especially noteworthy is that it can send notifications across all your Macs and/or via email. Even better, an iOS version is coming soon.
After you download and launch Notificant, the app will ask you to create a free account with Carmel Cloud. Once that's completed, you can send yourself notifications either through the app on your Mac or from the web-based service.
Adding a notification is simple. Click on the menubar icon and tap ... more
Even if you're just a little bit nerdy, you probably use Growl. It's a great notification system for your Mac that countless apps take advantage of. Well, we're increasingly away from our Macs because we have iPads and iPhones to play with. Luckily, we have two apps that will display your Mac's growl notifications on your iOS device.
First up, we have Howl. This is a very modern looking snazzy little app that works both on your iPad and iPhone/iPod touch. You can buy a universal binary of Howl ... more
I don't "love" Ping, but I do find myself using it from time to time. I love suggesting music to people, and Ping seems to be a great way to do that.
The only problem is that somewhere along the way I've told Ping it was okay to auto-tweet my suggestions. That drives me absolutely crazy.
Turns out turning Ping auto-tweets off is easier than most led me to believe. Here's how:
Select Ping in the sidebar,
Now click on your email address in the top-right corner (if you're signed in),
Insert ... more
Up until now, users had to use third party or jailbroken apps to get push notifications for Gmail on their iPhones. Not anymore, though. Google just recently released an update version of their app, with all the features that people have wanted for a long time.
This update, which is free on the iTunes App Store, allows users to sign into one or multiple Google accounts, as well as setting up Gmail and Google Calendar push notifications, which work very well. It is not yet clear how quickly the ... more

I love the thinness of the iPhone 5, but hate how fragile the device can be at times. Though I don’t drop my iPhone often, it has happened, and the only thing that has saved my mobile connection to the world is my case. As a frequent iPod, iPhone and
Two hundred and ten days, 22 hours, 33 minutes and 22 seconds No that’s not how long since the last Fast and the Furious sequel, it is the excruciating time lapsed since the last major Apple product launch. On October 23, 2012, the world was a kinder and more joyous
