Skype has responded to reports that the company’s Mac software shipped with a bug that could allow attackers to gain remote root access to a system via IM.
According to Skype’s Adrian Asher, the company was already aware of the issue and was working on a fix when they were alerted by Gordon Maddern of Australian security consultancy Pure Hacking.
Skype resolved the bug in Mac version 22.214.171.1242, which shipped on April 14. However, Skype did not push the update to users as mandatory, as no attacks were reported. However, the company reports that another update should be out “early next week.”
To make sure this patch is applied, check for updates within the Skype application, or download the newest build from the company’s website.
