Handbrake, the ever-popular transcoding app for the Mac (and other platforms), has reached a new milestone: 0.9.6. Considering it has been over a year since 0.9.5 shipped, and that was over a year after 0.9.4, this is worth noting.
When it gets to be 10, 11, and 12 months after the last stable release of Handbrake, I start using the nightly builds so that I can take advantage of all of the updated codecs. Trust me, this is worth the update. If you’re looking for much more than better compression, some minor tweaks, and a few Lion-related bug fixes, you’re in for some disappointment. However, it seems very stable, and substantially more so than the previous release.
As we reported a few weeks back, VLC 2.0 breaks DVD decryption for Handbrake, and this release does nothing to solve that problem. That said, this simple installer fixes that problem, so no harm done.
Also worth noting, Leopard support has been phased out. If you download the latest version of Handbrake, you have to be running a 64-Bit Intel Mac with either Snow Leopard or Lion installed. If you’re not doing that already, you shouldn’t really be surprised that apps are beginning to stop working.
