The run tracking app from Nike is free today. Nike+ GPS uses the built in GPS of your phone to track your runs, and then lets you quickly upload those runs to the nikeplus.com online community. Nike+ GPS doesn’t require you to have the Nike+ sensor in your shoe, so anyone can use this app to track their activity. As you run, the app keeps track of your location, and the time it took you to complete your run, and then calculates your pace, calories burned, and creates a record of your best times.

Other run tracking apps include RunKeeper, which recently went with a free model as well, so perhaps Nike+ is following suit. Previously priced at $1.99, the app is now free, as in beer. Well, maybe not beer.

Nike+ GPS also features motivational messages from Nike’s top athletes, personalized “Power Songs” that will give you a boost at just the right time, and a new Nike+ Tag game that lets you play tag with your friends. The Nike+ GPS app is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPod touch (2nd, 3rd and 4th gen), but only the iPhone will work with the GPS.

The power of a community to help you stay active can’t be underestimated. If you’ve been thinking about starting to run, or you just wanted something to help you stay motivated on your runs, there’s no reason not to check out the Nike+ GPS app now that it’s free.
