iPhone 5 production ramping up, Apple orders 5.5 million phones

If you’re looking to purchase an iPhone 5 when they finally roll out sometime between now and the new year, you may not have to worry about supply constraints. According to DigiTimes, Apple has lowered their orders from several million to 5.5 – 6 million units. To put things into perspective, Apple sold 1.7 million iPhone 4 devices on the first day of sale. The supply may be tight over the life of the first shipment, but it should certainly put the device in the hands of anyone out there looking for a phone on the first day.

More people walking away with an iPhone on launch day is a good thing, especially after the poor supply problems last year, and the iPad 2 supply problems this spring.

Adam Hwang, journalist for the DigiTimes, has gone on the record that Apple is expecting to ship 20 million iPhones in the third quarter this year. His math, and an unnamed source’s insights, suggest that Apple will sell 95 million units in 2011.

That’s a lot of phones.

Are you planning on getting in line on the first day of sales? If so, what Apple Store are you lining up at? Make sure you’re in our Flickr group so you can upload line photos.
