According to a new market research report out by Retrevo, 34 percent of iOS users believe they “already have” a 4G-capable device.
Which, of course, they don’t.
From Retrevo’s blog:
Maybe the “4” in the iPhone 4 name gives iPhone owners (34%) the false impression that they already own a 4G phone but the fact is Apple doesn’t offer a 4G phone at the moment.
I dismissed this complaint when Apple unveiled the iPhone 4 last summer as people simply being a tad too pedantic. On the other hand, I hear people call the current phone the “iPhone 4G” so much, I want to scream.
It is nearly as bad as the “iTouch.”
It seems that perhaps I put too much faith in the non-iOS buying portion of humanity, as well, however. Here’s another snippet:
Coincidentally, a suspiciously large percentage of Android and BlackBerry owners may be suffering from the same delusion. BlackBerry owners (24%) are almost as confused as iPhone owners since RIM doesn’t currently offer a 4G phone. At least some Android owners could be answering correctly as Android 4G phones like the HTC Evo 4G or Samsung Infuse 4G have been available for some time. If nothing else this large number of “misinformed” phone owners serves to emphasize the fact that consumers are quite confused about 4G.
While some could argue that Apple has added to the confusion of their customers, there’s no denying that Android and RIM users have probably been more mislead from carriers’ incessant advertising of 4G — even if that 4G is better described as “3G+.”
The 4G issues aside, Retrevo’s data shows that 40 percent of current iPhone owners will upgrade to the new device, with or without 4G onboard.
