If you want to take comics into the new millennium, you’ll want to read your comics on your iPad. Good thing we have some great apps to do just that, and they all use in-app purchases to make it simpler than ever to nerd out.
If you like more adult comics — adult as in “for grown-ups,” not in the pornographic sense — Dark Horse is probably a household name for you. They have hundreds of series, and many of them that are well regarded: 300 by Frank Miller, B.P.R.D., Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, The Guild, Dr. Horrible, and more Star Wars than you can shake a stick at. I hesitate to call Dark Horse “Indie” at this point, but they certainly take more risks with the franchises they publish than the big two.
X-Men, Spider-Man, The Hulk, The Avengers, and so many other characters that your little cousin has never heard about until they made blockbusters out of them. Marvel has a huge library of comics available from their app, and they are finally seeing the importance of day and date digital release.
Batman, Superman, The Watchmen, and JLA are all DC comics, and they are available in the DC app. Not long ago, DC rebooted pretty much their entire comic universe, so you can jump in now without reading decades of backstory.
If you’re a comic lover, you’re going to want Comics (better known as comiXology). It has both DC and Marvel comics for sale as well dozens of other, smaller comic publishers. This is the mecca of digital comics. If you’re only going to get one app, make it this one.
