Australian Police Warn People Against Relying On Apple Maps After Motorists Get Stranded

Australian police are warning people against using Apple Maps, saying it could end up in someone getting killed. The warning comes just after a group of motorists looking for the Victorian city of Mildura ended up stranded in a wilderness area thanks to Apple Maps’ guidance.

The motorists were stranded for up to 24 hours without food or water and had to walk long distances through “dangerous terrain” to find phone reception.

When the police tested Apple’s mapping system, it lists Mildura in the middle of the Murray Sunset National Park, which is about 70 km away from where Mildura is actually located. The police said there is no water supply within the Park and temperatures can reach as high as 46 degrees, which is what really made this situation dangerous.

This is the first time people have been stranded in the Park when looking for Mildura. Victoria Police said that in the past two months they’ve rescued six people who got lost trying to find Mildura. Inspector Simon Clemence said, “If it was a 45-degree day, someone could actually die. It’s quite a dangerous situation, so we would be calling for people not to use the new Apple iPhone mapping system if they’re travelling South Australia to Mildura.”

The Australian Police have contacted Apple to report these issues, but is advising people not to use Apple Maps until the bugs can be worked out.
