During the iPhone 5 event in September, Apple announced that there are 700,000 apps available to download on the iTunes App Store and the company reiterated this number again last week at the iPad mini event, making it one of the strongest app ecosystems. But now Google is ready to rival this, and has announced that it, too, has 700,000 apps available to download on Android devices, according to Bloomberg.
This means that Google has matched Apple in the number of games, productivity tools, and other apps that are available for mobile devices, like tablets and smartphones. Google has 25,000 more apps available today than it did just one month ago, challenging Apple for the title of “world’s biggest app ecosystem.”
In bringing its number to the same level as Apple and luring software developers to the Android platform, Google is trying to take away one of Apple’s key selling points for iPhones and iPads. Applications have become a strong battle between the two companies, as both look for an advantage in the $219.1 billion smartphone market.
In the fight for first place, Apple has argued that its iOS operating system brings in more sales and announced last week that it has paid $6.5 billion to developers since the App Store was introduced in 2008.
