What do you get when you merge the Mac and iPad numbers? How about an HP destruction machine that’s destined to topple Hewlett-Packard as the world’s leading computer vendor. According to HP CEO Meg Whitman, Apple could pass HP in market share in 2012, putting Apple at the top of the PC-vendor pile.
A recent study by Canalys currently has Apple at 15 percent of the market, and only a tiny 1 percent behind HP’s 16 percent share.
Whitman went on the record to a French newspaper called Le Figaro (note, it was translated into French, and then back out again):
Yes. I think it’s possible if you integrate tablets. Apple does a great job. We need to improve our game and our products to take over the leadership position. Apple could go past HP in 2012. We will try to become the champion in 2013. It takes time for the products on which I have come to influence the market.
Obviously detractors are going to argue that the iPad isn’t a personal computer, and Apple fans will argue that the iPad is certainly a personal computer. For us, the tell is whether or not people are buying iPads instead of computers; while that may hold true for some, for some people the iPad is a complementary device.
