If you’re annoyed about Final Cut Pro X’s inability to import Final Cut Pro 7, or even 6 projects, we have some good news for you. Philip Hodgetts, a popular video production blogger, reached out to Apple for some answers about missing features and got some more answers for us. Primarily, Pro X will eventually let users import FCP 6 and 7 projects in an upcoming update. The software should also get a replacement for an XML workflow as well as multicam editing. It’s his understanding that Apple will release a utility to update the projects. He also recommends not upgrading mid-project, despite the promises for importability coming in the future.
It’s also being noted by Larry Jordan that Apple plans on decreasing their Final Cut update schedule from 18 months down to about two updates per year. That could mean we might see this update anywhere between next month and 6 months from now, should this also be true. Given the annoyances being aired online about Final Cut Pro X, we’d guess that these updates are a major priority. People are already making plans for moving on to other packages without even trying the newly minted Final Cut Pro X. That’s bad news for Apple.
Currently, should these nuggest turn out to be legitimate, there’s no update set for the near future, so all you fine film editors are going to have to go without your missing features for a while longer. But, at least there’s some promising information today, unlike yesterday, where it was mostly doom and gloom for Apple’s pro video-editing bundle.

LikeHOW APPLE KILLED FINAL CUT PRO
First of all, i am a apple junkie, down to the core, love it and live apple.
when skeptics last month were nagging on Final Cut Pro X, i was the one saying "no way Apple would kill all the Pro features, you will see"
Along comes D-day, FINAL CUT PRO X is out, wow!!! Can it really be? it was like Xmas for me.. i wait for a friend to buy it before jumping the gun. After a quick install and launch, we are up…
WTF?? NO sequences? NO project settings? NO video output? NO EDL? NO XML? NO precise way to adjust keyframe settings like in FCP 7? NO assignment of audio tracks? NO Multicam tool? NO Capture from Tape? Where did all the output setting go? no flexibility to change your project settings and output to the way you want. The list goes on and on.
Xmas was over, Santa is a fake and Final Cut Pro X is no longer a Pro app. Very sad;(
A few months ago, i was helping my friends kid to setup himself on imovie and i remembered the interface well and the lack of any Pro features.. Now we have Final Cut Pro X with the same type interface and the same problem with a lack of Pro Features… What happened? did all the Final Cut Pro engineers get fired and the iMovie engineers said "we can do it for you"?
For a Pro user that works on TV shows, this is unusable!!!!
if there is no "major" updates to bring back all the Pro Featues in the next months, i will have to go back to Avid Media Composer after 12 years with Final Cut Pro.
As far as i see, Final Cut Pro is dead for the professional user, Apple decided to sell out to the general public. Shame on you APPLE!!!!!

LikeMy company does video editing and makes photo slideshows for weddings and other events. We use a combination of iMovie and Premiere. I bought Final Cut yesterday, and it fits my needs well. It will certainly take iMovie out of my workflow. Once they implement multi-cam, we might be able to replace Premiere.
I will say that they shouldn't have named it Final Cut. It's a completely different product than previous versions, and it has much more in common with iMovie. If they would have released it as a different brand (possibly even iMovie Pro), it wouldn't receive near the criticism.
I'm happy with the new product. It helps me finish projects faster, which makes me more money. I feel sorry for previous Final Cut fans, who would have been happier to spend $1,000 to just adding 64bit support and multi-core processing.

LikeI think Apple messed this one up pretty bad. $299 for an incomplete product, very un-Apple-like. Waiting for promised updates on some vague future date, so you can have features that should have been there in the first place, is definately not Apple-like. I think iOS is their main focus and everything else is just secondary. It shows.

LikeSome of us have waited a very long time for significant updates to FCP - and now this?! Yikes! Is Apple even wanting to stay in the Pro Video market? In all seriousness I'd like a direct answer to that question because we've got some serious decisions to make. To reiterate: By now FCP is in a relatively arcane state and this update was a very long time in coming for those of us making a living with this tool. And now to get all excited about a product that's going to be more like iMovie...? Again, Yikes! Premiere is looking better all of the time with one caveat - their history of uninterrupted support for professional video editing on the Mac doesn't exist. It's been a long time since I actually felt excited about a new video package, and I was excited about FCP X - so excited in fact that I started a P.O. to upgrade all of our editors - I've pulled the plug indefinitely and am very seriously considering moving to Premiere - while it's there for the Mac.
I've been a Mac user since the beginning of Mac time and I've noticed a few things, here's one: When Apple wants to do something they can get it just so totally right - but when their hearts are not fully into something it's too often mediocre and at best all flash with no substance. What's it gonna be Apple? Are we getting serious about FCP or is it just gonna fade into another iMovie/iDVD iMi Madré irrelevance?
Dare I say XSAN...!?

LikeSeems that they took this route for the new iMovie, left out features and then added them back in in a later update. Wonder what their thinking is behind that?

LikeNot sure, but it seems like a measured move, especially if it just wasn't ready yet.

LikeYeah, for a pro app probably should have just held onto a bit longer until ready. They've really got some pissed off people.
I've just started playing in it today and have enjoyed it a lot. I've finished my FCP7 projects and have just started new ones in FCP X, luckily don't need multicam edits for the current one I'm working on. :)
