It’s not too often that the big wigs at Apple take time out of their busy schedules to address the media about delayed products. But, that’s exactly what they did today when they partook in an interview with All Things Digital’s Ina Fried.
Both Phil Schiller and Steve Jobs were on the call, answering questions about all the delays associated with the white iPhone 4. Here’s a quote from the article,
Schiller said that it turned out there were a lot of unexpected interactions between the color of the device and various internal components. Also, like fair-skinned humans, white iPhones need a little more UV protection from the sun.
What is unclear from the interview is why the white iPhone 4 had so much difficulty when the 3GS came in white. Were the problems something that they noticed in the 3GS model? Also, did the white iPad 2 suffer the same problems early on? Have those problems, if they even existed in the first place, been solved? The All Things Digital article doesn’t really explain all that much about why the iPhone 4 was so difficult to make white, outside of the fact that the albino iPhone 4 needed more UV protection. Rumors previously alluded to light leak problems, glue problems between the case and the glass, as well as a whole host of other things. As it stands, we probably won’t ever hear the whole story about the mysterious white iPhone 4 delays. We’re fine with that. We’re just happy to be moving on from this unicorn to bigger and better things, like iPhone 6 rumors. But, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little bit sad to be retiring all of our super awesome white iPhone 4 unicorn graphics.

Seriously? 3Gs case is opaque plastic. IPhone4 "case" is glass. Light doesn't generally leak through polycarbonate. Glass, on the other hand.... It's like comparing a painted window to painted drywall. I wonder why some light bleeds through the window?
