Mac App Store: over one million downloads on day one

January 7, 2011

Apple Inc.

Today Apple has announced that the Mac App Store has topped one-million downloads in the first 24 hours.

A pretty good number considering that the Mac App Store requires updating to Snow Leopard 10.6.6 before you can access the store and its contents.

How does this compare to the iOS App Store’s launch? Well, it’s significantly less. The iOS App Store commanded 10 million downloads in the first weekend, which averages about 5 million per day for all you math-impared people out there. If Apple gets another million downloads today it will only be 20% of the sales made through the iOS App Store back in 2008.

This is not entirely surprising considering that there is still a significant number of Macs that are not running Snow Leopard, so I think this number will continue to grow and become more profitable as time marches on.

I really don't think that is the issue. Most Mac users have a Dock full of apps already. I know that there really is nothing in the Mac App Store that I need that I didn't already have. That wasn't true for the original iOS App Store, since all users had before were the built-in, Apple-supplied apps.

Totally agree, I spent a lot of time yesterday looking for things to buy, but only really found one or two things to spend cash on. I think this might change once more apps start rolling into the store. As it stands, most of the bigger apps that were worth buying in there I already have. I was fully ready to purchase iWork 11 had it shipped, but we all know how that played out.
