Sony prepping the official PlayStation App for the iPhone

In an interesting and somewhat bizarre move, Sony is bringing an official PlayStation App to the iPhone. It’s interesting because Sony has seen iOS as a competitor for a while now, but it’s also bizarre because the app is a portal to check out PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with friends.

The application will also bring access to information about the PlayStation 3, PSP, and PS2 to the iPhone. We’re actually a little bit surprised that Apple’s letting this one through the approval process, considering they denied an Android magazine earlier this month.

The application is not yet available on the App Store, but it should be available shortly.

So what’s the end game Sony? Is it getting iOS users back in your corner? Is it testing the waters for iOS releases? Or, maybe they just want to make sure Sony fans who own iPhones are in the loop.

What do you guys think? I really don’t know what to think about this one. Maybe it’s a sign of the times. Who knows?
