Somehow the Wall Street Journal managed to get its hands on Verizon’s device sales information. The information is pretty interesting on the surface, but when overlaid with AT&T sales information, it shows the impact the iPhone has on sales.
According to Asymco analyst Horace Dediu, the iPhone 4.0 managed to outsell all smartphones on the Verizon network to the tune of 2.5 to 1. That’s one phone on the AT&T network, outselling WebOS, Android & WM and Blackberry combined on the Verizon network.
What’s perhaps even more telling is the amount of units sold from August through to October of this year: sales dropped for all other vendors. This massive drop off in sales managed to coincide with the iPhone 4 release and in spite of the Antennagate fiasco that was fabricated by a few select blogs.
Perhaps the most interesting information coming from Dediu is that Verizon’s access to Android will not be enough to remain competitive with AT&T: “In an apples-to-apples comparison, in Q3 the iPhone at AT&T outsold Android at Verizon (remember, same addressable market) by a factor of 2.5” (Dediu).
Dediu clearly believes that selling the iPhone on the Verizon network is a smart move for Verizon. It will not only help them keep pace with AT&T, but it might also drastically influence sales ratios on the Verizon network.
“The data shows that Verizon sold, on average, about 3 million smartphones per quarter during the first nine months. That’s about 1 million a month. That was based on three platforms, six vendors and widespread promotion.
The iPhone sold almost 4 million a quarter over the same time period.”
If the iPhone finds its way to Verizon, we should have an interesting year in the mobile marketplace. Asymco thinks that the iPhone could find upwards of 12 million new customers on the Verizon network. That would certainly skew market share information.
