Rumors of iPad 2.0 features surface

November 26, 2010

iPad

According to a report floating around the web, Apple’s next iPad will include five new hardware features:

  • A thinner chasis with thinner glass
  • A 3-axis gyroscope
  • A FaceTime camera
  • A USB Port
  • A Retina Display

Those first three items are pretty safe guesses. Apple is usually good about making subsequent products lighter and thinner. At 1.5 pounds, the iPad could lose a little weight. Thinner glass would go a long way.

Both the iPhone 4 and the current iPod touch sport a 3-axis gyroscope. This sensor allows the device to know if it is being spun around a central pivot. It’s a little hard to explain, but here’s a video of Steve Jobs showing the technology off.

Thirdly, the addition of a FaceTime camera really seems like a no-brainer. With FaceTime now running on the iPhone, iPod touch and the Mac, the iPad is the odd-man out. I think a rear-facing camera will make an appearance as well, but I think taking a photo with a 10-inch tablet would be more than a little awkward.

The USB port rumor is an interesting one. A USB port would allow for the possibility of connecting more devices to the iPad. Currently, the company sells a kit with two dongles — one to connect an SD card and one to connect a camera (via USB) to the iPad for importing photos. Why not simply add more capabilities to this USB dongle?

If Apple does add a USB port to the iPad, I don’t see it replacing the 3o-pin Dock Connector. Apple has been using the Dock Connector on its mobile devices since the third-generation iPod. There is an abundantly healthy third-party market based on this connector. A market Apple can influence, since manufacturers have to abide by the company’s compatibility guidelines to be a part of the “Made for iPod” program. A USB port in conjunction with the Dock Connector makes more sense, but honestly, I don’t see it happening. Why would Apple want to fragment the hardware accessory market?

Adding a mini USB port could fulfill an up-coming European Commission requirement for a “universal charger” on mobile devices.

Finally, the Retina Display. While I do think Apple will improve the display quality on the next iPad, I don’t believe Apple will be quadrupling the pixels on the iPad, as it did with the iPhone 4.

As Ryan Block at gdgt explains, this display would be pretty ridiculous:

However, using standard resolution increments, one can achieve an almost identical PPI to the iPhone 4 on the iPad at a stunning 2560 x 1920 pixels, or the same 330 PPI as in the iPhone 4.

Maybe 2560 x 1920 doesn’t sound like a lot, but it should. Let’s put that in context with the kinds of high resolutions you get on some professional-grade desktop products:

- MacBook Pro 15-inch = 1440 x 900
- Macbook Pro 15-inch high-res = 1680 x 1050
- Macbook Pro 17-inch = 1920 x 1200
- Dell 24-inch monitor = 1920 x 1200

Think about that for a moment: a 9.7-inch screen that displays more visual information than two high res 24-inch monitors stacked on top of one another.

A true “Retina Display” on the iPad would be really, really dense. Probably too dense.

One wildcard is the Multi-Touch technology itself. Some have said Apple will improve this on the next model. Since the launch of the original Multi-Touch device — the original iPhone — Apple hasn’t mentioned any improvements it’s brought to Multi-Touch. Adding new gestures or new technology here would certainly only put Apple’s products further ahead of its competition’s products.

Rumors aside, it sure seems like Apple will unveil the next generation iPad early in 2011. We can all simply wonder until then.

The European Commission's initiative for a universal cell phone charger applies, if you will excuse the repetition, to chargers, not the devices they charge. Apple is maker being closer to comply already, if only not because Apple's chargers use full size USB instead of mini-USB.

Whether Apple adds a USB port to the device or not, that does not fulfill the EC requirement any better (or worse). That would not be at all the reason, then.

JD: I'd like to know which public universally agrees that 7" is a nonstarter. Plenty of people feel that 7" is an excellent size. I think Steve either shot himself in the foot with his 'not gonna happen' or will eventually retract.

As for the article's take on the Retina, I have to agree... that's a lot of pixels in such a small space. More probable is another theory floating around that the term "Retina" will simply have broader meaning. Double instead of quadruple the # pixels, certain criteria for glare, saturation, etc.... but yeah, probably not the same as the Retina on the iPhone 4.

A faster chip is a no-brainer. The next generation will HAVE to have a faster chip just to be seen as the next generation, period. I don't think that one would even be in the category of 'rumour'. To release the next iPad with the same chip would be media suicide.

Ha. steve jobs will never take his statement back. Apple might release smaller iPad but not a 7".

The Apple rumor's get more accurate the closer we are to the announcement. But what most these rumors always seem to leave out are the details. It's in the details of each new feature that people will love or hate.

Thinner and lighter iPad: What does it actually take for Apple to do this? The bulk of the iPad's weight is the battery. So the break through in weight will come from the battery and without sacrificing battery life. And possibly needing to make it last longer than before. I don't think thinner glass will be something that Apple promotes.

Gyroscope: Simple. It's not hard for Apple to add sensors.

FaceTime Camera: I'm still not so sure Apple will do cameras on the iPad. I think they probably don't want to. Taking a photo with iPad looks ridiculous and so will FaceTime video calls. Unless the weight is 1 lbs. Or you'll just be looking up iPad users noses.

If there is a front facing camera, it will be low res. Identical to the iPhone 4. People will complain it's not 3mp or something not needed. The rear camera will be identical to the iPhone 4 or maybe the iPod Touch. If it's the later, people will complain also. Will this rear camera have a Flash? Physically they could fit 5 cameras on the device.

Personally, I think it will just have a front facing camera. No rear. What if Apple allowed USB or Bluetooth webcams? This would solve the up the nose issue.

USB port. If Apple does port a mini/micro USB port. What will it do? More than likely it won't do half the stuff geeks want. It would probably just do the same thing the current 30 pin to USB adapter does. Charging? I don't know. The iPad already charges via USB, admittedly a high voltage USB. I don't think it's going to happen unless Apple drops the dock connector altogether. Which will make people upset because the new iPad doesn't fit the old iPad accessories. Still don't know why people get surprised by this kind of move by Apple. Apple doesn't care about backwards compatibility.

I'd like to see Apple have an Aperture iPad app that let's you tether your pro DSLR camera so you can use the big screen for instant photo reviews. iMovie for iPad, letting you import video from your iPhone to edit video on the big screen?

Retina Display: Would be amazing but I'm not sure a retina display of this size would be cheap enough for even for Apple's buying power. The iPad's screen resolution does need to go up though. But what resolution will still work with existing Apps?

I think the new iPad will debut Apple's next chip. A5? 1.? GHz. 1 GB RAM or more. Does storage need to go up? 32, 64, 128?

Looking forward to see what Apple does without getting personally upset by what they don't do.

I wonder if the camera would be included more for augmented reality reasons than for photo reasons. I agree though, holding up an iPad (at the current size) to snap a pic would get old real quick.

That would be nice. But I don't think apple see's augmented reality as a real priority.

Anyone ever wonder why these stupid "next version" device rumors just happen to come out right at a time when Apple would want you concentrating on the current version?

All this 2.0 talk is going to talk people out of buying an iPad for the holiday season... not knowing they could just sell it for what they paid (or better) on eBay and upgrade WHEN the next one comes out vs. speculating.... waiting... waiting.. speculating... rumor mongering...

Its dumb. Lets talk about how good v1.0 just got with iOS 4.2 and worry about the next version when it comes out. Half the rumors are horse )#(*$ anyway... retinal display, NOT. 7"... Steve J. already said BS and the public agrees.

Jobs has pulled the "not gonna happen" then released the same product before. Personally I don't mind the iPads current size, but a 7in model may be intriguing. I guess the question is: would a 7in tablet replace or cannibalize the iPod touch.
