Worth Reading: Preserving London’s ‘Mail Rail.’

Anyone of a certain age is probably fascinated by abandoned subway stations after seeing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. London’s Underground holds just as many secrets, including an abandoned line used to deliver mail until 2003.

The line is about to be converted into a museum and ride, but before then it will be preserved with a laser scanner and DSLR to map out everything in 3D:

“Conceptually, this removes the need to take a photograph and choose the angle when you’re at the location,” ScanLab co-founder William Trossell says. “You can come back into our office and spend months, or years finding exactly the right perspective.”
