Tip: Use Spotlight To Quickly Browse Calendar (iCal) Events

Here’s a tip for how to browse your Calendar events (or iCal events for us still existing Lion users) much more quickly in Finder with Spotlight.

  • Just enter your search keyword (like someone’s name, ex. Mike) into Spotlight and the results shown will be sorted by type.
  • Move your cursor over a matching Calendar result and a pop-up will appear that shows where the event is placed in Calendar, along with other surrounding events from the same day (if you searched for Mike, anything with ‘Mike’ in it will appear, whether it’s a weekly meeting or a birthday).
  • Click on the event you’re looking for in the pop-up window and it will jump right to it in Calendar.

This is especially useful if you’re the type of person who puts your whole life into Calendar or for those who are extremely forgetful about what’s happening when. Now you don’t have to look through each day to find the event you’re looking for; just search the keyword and voila!

Note that this only works with iCal in Lion and with Calendar in Mountain Lion. Those still stuck in the stone age with Snow Leopard are out of luck.
