Telus Is The First Canadian Carrier To Offer Two-Year Wireless Contracts, Bell To Follow Suite

In early June, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced new rules for Canadian carriers, including one that says Canadians can cancel their wireless contracts without fees after two years, even if a three year contract was signed. Today Telus Mobility is the first Canadian carrier to announce the arrival of new two-year contracts that will officially go into effect on July 30. Bell will reportedly introduce their own two-year contract terms on July 17.

Telus’ new plans include easy device unlocking, simpler contract terms, flex plans and no device activation fees. The new plans will also introduce unlimited talk along with a “data bucket” that customers can choose to share across the account. The plans will be available for individuals, families, and small business as well, with up to fifteen devices allowed under a single plan.

Bell is also expected to make changes on July 17 by launching its own two-year plans. With the new plans, the cost of devices will vary depending on what plan is chosen, either Voice, Voice and Data Life, or Voice and Data Plus.

When the CRTC’s new rules were announced, Rogers also promised to make the necessary changes by the effective date of December 2, 2013, but hasn’t given any indication of when exactly the new compliant plans will arrive before that date.
