Starck Project Was For Jobs’ Yacht, Not Apple

The moment the news broke that Philippe Starck was working with Apple we had a feeling something was a little bit off. While there was no direct mention of what Philippe Starck was working on at Apple, terms like “revolutionary product” were being tossed around the rumor blogs. While the product may indeed be revolutionary, it turns out that Philippe Starck was not building something for Apple. Nope, he was building a yacht for Steve Jobs. The yacht, originally being built for Steve, is now being completed by his wife, according to the Wall Street Journal.

From The Wall Street Journal:

“It’s not a project with Apple. It’s a private project that began with Steve Jobs and that has been taken over by his wife.” In an interview with a French radio station, Mr. Starck disclosed that he went to visit Mr. Jobs once a month over the past seven years. “We liked to talk about interesting things. We were working on a big project that will come out in eight months.,” he said, adding that he’s going to see Jobs’ widow in California Monday. “It’ll be quite revolutionary, if not very revolutionary,” Mr. Starck said, adding that he couldn’t say more about it because of Apple’s “almost religious cult of secrecy.”

We may be in the minority, but if the quotes from the Wall Street Journal are correct, it looks like Starck knew exactly what he was doing when conflating the yacht project and Apple’s secrecy while talking to a French radio station. Mentioning the two, and leaving out details on who the project was for, was going to inevitably lead to people combining the two into one story. We’re not saying he was out looking for press, but it kind of looks like he was out looking for free press, doesn’t it?
