Rumor: Last second iPad 2 and MobileMe rumors surface

We’ve been sitting on a number of rumors today, since we’re only a day away from the big announcement. Well, at least what a lot of us were thinking was going to be a big announcement. Turns out, it might be more of a middle of the rung type of announcement.

On the iPad 2

According to Cult of Mac, the iPad 2 will be launching tomorrow (which we all knew), but it will likely be a speed bump, just like we said a month ago. But, the rumor doesn’t end there. An “Apple staffer” claims that the iPad 3 is on course for a release later this year, and that it will be a larger update to the device.

For the iPad 2 don’t get your hopes up too high. That’s all I’m going to say. They’ve had a number of problems along the way, and the third-generation iPad is the one to make a song and a dance about.

It certainly lends credence to the rumors that appeared on Daring Fireball, and was explained a bit further on The Loop earlier this month. We’re with them as well. Our best guess is a speed bump, with some minor tweaks and the inclusion of a camera.

On MobileMe

Cult of Mac’s source, who remains nameless by the way, also dropped a MobileMe doozy in the laps of the Internet today. Apparently MobileMe will see a revamp that lets users store TV shows, films, and music in the cloud. There was also some talk about Apple letting users upload their current media libraries online. I hope that data centre in North Carolina is ready for gigabytes of questionable videos.

A lot of people expect that Apple will make a jump to the cloud sooner rather than later, since they’ve recently picked up Lala. But, unsubstantiated news circulated this week pointing out that Apple views Lala as insurance should the industry move to a streaming system over direct downloads.

So that’s where we stand a day before the iPad 2 announcement.
