Rumor: AirPlay to come to a TV near you, courtesy of Apple

AirPlay, Apple’s streaming technology, has changed the way that a lot of people use their home theatre equipment. Being able to push music and video from your iPhone, iPad, or computer to your Apple TV changed the way that I personally consume video and audio on a day to day basis.

The problem for most is that it requires purchasing an Apple TV to take advantage of the technology. At $99.00, it’s not exactly going to break the bank, but it is an additional cost nonetheless. Apple might be gearing up to change that.

According to Bloomberg, Apple might be getting ready to license AirPlay to TV manufactures in the near future. Bloomberg’s source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, pointed out that the move would let users stream video content from an Apple mobile device to any TV that supported AirPlay.

Currently AirPlay is only being licensed for audio-only streams, but that could all change in the near future. Apple could find themselves in consumers’ living rooms a lot sooner than they would if they were to create their own television down the road.
