Microsoft Has Huge Goals for Xbox 360… Still…

With the excitement of a new console comes the disappointment and harsh reality that the system you now own is on its way to becoming obsolete.  That may not be the case with the Xbox 360 though, according to an interview Microsoft conducted with the Official Xbox Magazine. Microsoft believes that they can keep the Xbox 360 around for another 5 years. Even more surprisingly, Microsoft wants to sell another 25 million of them.

What exactly will Microsoft be doing to make its goal a reality though? No details were revealed in the Official Xbox Magazine piece, although gamers are expected to stay tuned for this year’s E3 for more juicy details.

It is unbelievable that a system can last this long, as the Xbox 360 was launched in late 2005. With console makers investing more money and features into consoles then ever, it is unsurprising that they want to get as much life out of them as possible. We shall see if developers are willing to invest development time for another 5 years in both a next-generation and previous-generation console.

If we had to hazard a guess, we’d bet on a software update that makes the device more Apple TV than next-gen gaming console.
