How Many Social Buttons Does It Take To Make A Facebook? Apparently One More

Facebook isn’t content with the number of social buttons littering the side of the Internet highway these days. Currently there’s a recommend sign, a like sign, a send sign, and probably more we don’t really care to know about. But that doesn’t stop the company form adding yet another. It sounds like Facebook is about to add another sign to their arsenal of cluttering buttons, and this time it’s a Want button.

Can we just say that we Do Not Want another button to click?

Developer Tom Waddington from Cut Out + Keep discovered that a Want button has been added to the Facebook Javascript SDK as an XFBML tag –. The button is not publicly listed among the other social plugins on Facebook’s developer site. Waddington says the button will only work on Open Graph objects marked as “products.”

First, what’s the difference between liking something, and wanting something? Arn’t they synonyms at this point, as far as Open Graph data collection goes? I mean, I rarely click a like button these days, but if I do, and it’s a product that’s being sold, chances are that I want it. It doesn’t mean I’m willing to buy it, but I’d probably take it if someone gave it to me.

Sardonic musings aside, it’s highly likely that Facebook wants to know with out a shadow of a doubt what people have a mere interest in products, and what products consumers are actually willing to shell out cash for on the Internet.

Again, Do Not Want.
