Facebook announced today that, beginning Monday, the company will no longer serve ads on the side of pages or groups that it deems to be “controversial.” Pages that include any “violent, graphic or sexual content” will no longer feature ads, a move done following protests from certain activist groups.

There has been controversy regarding Facebook profiting off ads that are posted on pages which promote offensive content. Women’s rights groups in particular have vocally protested against Facebook including ads on pages which promote violence against women.

“While we already have rigorous review and removal policies for content against our terms, we recognize we need to do more to prevent situations where ads are displayed alongside controversial Pages and Groups,” Facebook stated.

Facebook says that it will start by hand picking pages it deems unfit to include ads, but the company is optimistic that it will have a more automated way to prevent advertising on such pages in the coming weeks

Facebook isn’t the only company that has been making some policy changes regarding adult content and advertising, just yesterday Google announced that it would be hampering down on adult related advertising on its Blogger sites.
