Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer has unveiled a company-wide restructuring plan dubbed “One Microsoft”. The plan is set to allow the company to operate holistically. The company will be organized in a set of functions that include Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Business Development, Legal, and Chief Operating Officer. Microsoft will also be split into four engineering areas: Operating System, Cloud, Devices, and Apps. Ballmer hopes that these groups will increase collaboration throughout the many teams at Microsoft and increase the speed of innovation at the company.
Steve Ballmer said the following on Microsoft’s restructuring:
It is also clear to me and our leadership that we must do an extraordinary job to succeed in this modern world. We have delivered many great products and had much success in market, but we all want more. That means better execution from product conceptualization and innovation right through to marketing and sales. It also means operational excellence in cloud services, datacenter operations, and manufacturing and supply chain that are essential in a devices and services world. To advance our strategy and execute more quickly, more efficiently, and with greater excellence we need to transform how we organize, how we plan and how we work.
Personally, I believe that this restructuring will be good for the company. Microsoft, like Google, is a very bloated company that offers dozens of services. Consolidating them into four engineering categories will help its employees focus on the company’s main products and work to improve them as large teams.
