Apple removes Windows XP and Vista from Boot Camp options

It looks like Apple’s done what Microsoft still can’t–eliminate support for Windows XP and Vista. The current version of Snow Leopard, OS X 10.6.6, has apparently removed Windows XP references from Boot Camp’s installation procedure. As of 10.6.6, users will no longer be asked to provide a Windows XP or Vista disc for installation; instead, users will now be prompted for an “Authentic installation disc of Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate” when they install a Bootcamp partition

It should be pointed out that OS X 10.6.6 has been available for a while now through software update, but I haven’t personally used Boot Camp since its original release. So if anyone’s recently installed a Windows XP or Vista partition with Bootcamp running on a system with 10.6.6, we’d love to hear from you in the comments. It’s also being reported by MacNN and TUAW that Boot Camp now also asks users to download additional software and drivers directly from the web, instead of relying on installation media.

This news isn’t all that exciting, but it provided me with a nice little chuckle.
