Apple now in second purchasing position for accelerometers, gyroscopes, and microphones

According to DigiTimes, Apple’s now the world’s second-largest purchaser of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and microphones. Apple’s gone from ordering around $90 million dollars worth of product in 2009 to $195 million in 2010.

What’s pretty crazy is that Apple’s only $5 million away from displacing Samsung from the number one spot. The differential between 2009 and 2010 would be huge for any company, let alone Apple Inc. According to the research, Apple spending on the sensors increased 116.8% year over year, while the next biggest increase came from Sony at 55.7% increase, from $61 million to $95 million.

The difference in spending could be attributed to the creation of the iPad 2, as well as the iPhone 4 and iPod touch last year. Either way, it’s pretty clear from the numbers that Apple’s investing heavily in these technologies in their devices.
