The High-Def format war has been over for almost a year and a half now. That fact begs the question “When will us Mac users get some love on the Blu-Ray front?” Apple called the format a “Bag of hurt,” but this is starting to get embarrassing. As a Mac user, I pride myself on being on the cutting edge. Not being able to watch commercial Blu-Ray movies on my Macs is starting to really irritate me.
Sure, we can get high quality movies and TV shows through iTunes. That’s great, but I love special features. I’m fairly certain that a high proportion of HD enthusiasts are also fans of special features. I’m also fairly certain that the same group of people are also smart enough to get what they want in an illicit fashion. If our only options are “Run Windows on your Mac to watch Blu-Rays” or “Download the ripped content illegally,” the bit torrent option is always going to win out. Apple’s refusal to get on the Blu-Ray bandwagon is forcing enthusiasts to become criminals. If we could just buy Blu-Rays discs, and then watch them on our Macs like Windows users can, then there wouldn’t be this problem.
The worst part is Apple’s silence on the matter. Ever since the aforementioned comment from Steve Jobs, there has been absolutely no talk about it. That is unacceptable for a premium computer company as far as I am concerned. If we want Blu-Ray support on the Mac, we need to start putting the screws to Apple. Let your voices be heard.
