Apple And Samsung Drop Additional Claims

Apple and Samsung are set to go to court at the end of this month (July 30) over  many patent disputes. However, Judge Lucy Koh wanted the two companies to narrow down their claims before duking it out in court. Judge Koh may also limit each party’s presentation times and exhibits.

Judge Koh not only wanted to drop these claims because of time, but because she thought it was a “cruel and unusual punishment to a jury”. Orders to drop claims were given in May 2012.

Apple has dropped the final claim for  U.S. Patent No. 7,663,607. This broad patent covers multitouch touchscreen technology. And while the claim has been dropped, Apple has dropped it without prejudice, which means that it can be reasserted at a later time. Apple has also dropped smaller claims such as claims against the Galaxy Tab 7’s packaging.
