Yahoo! Messenger brings free video and audio calls to iPhone

Yahoo! Messenger, which just reached version 2.0, has brought both audio and video calls to their iOS application. It looks as if this video calling from mobile devices is starting to finally take off, after decades full of geeks lusting after the technology.

In addition to the video and voice calling, Yahoo! Messenger is a chat application that lets you chat with both your Yahoo! and Windows Live messenger friends. They also have a desktop client for both Windows and the Mac. Also included in the 2.0 iOS application is the ability to make calls directly to landline or mobile phones, at a low cost.

Early reports have indicated that the application’s video chats are not as crisp as FaceTime’s, but that they are of acceptable quality. There’s also been mention by commenters on the App Store that the iOS version does not seem to connect to friends using the Mac version of Yahoo! Messenger. We haven’t been able to confirm it, but if true, it will likely be fixed in a short period of time.

Do you use Yahoo! Messenger as your chat service of choice? Between MSN, Gtalk, AIM, and Skype, we have most of our bases covered, and don’t feel the need to add another chat client to our repertoire. If you do use Yahoo! Messenger on a daily basis, what makes it stand out from other options for you? Let us know in the comments.

You can download Yahoo! Messenger for free on the App Store.
