iOS is full of neat little tricks that maybe not everyone knows about. Here’s a new one that tells iOS 6 users how to delete individual tracks or albums from iTunes Match right on your iPhone or iPad.
It’s important to know how the Music app and iTunes Match work together. If you’ve switched on iTunes Match on your iOS device with Settings > Music > iTunes > Match On, then you won’t be able to manually delete tracks that are stored on your iPhone or iPad. However, though you can’t manually delete tracks with iTunes Match on, the Music app will automatically delete tracks when you need more space. It does so by deleting the oldest, least-played tracks first.
So how can you get manual control over deleting tracks?
- Go back to Settings > Music and turn off iTunes Match.
- Return to the Music app and wait for your iTunes Match content to disappear.
- Choose a view where you can see a list of tracks.
- Swipe to the right on a track that you want to get rid of.
- A red Delete button will appear — tap it.
To delete more than one track at a time:
- Choose Playlists, Artists, or Albums.
- Tap and hold the item you want to delete (playlist, artist’s catalog, or album).
- An X will appear in the top left corner — tap it.
It’s a little confusing with having to switch iTunes Match on and off, but hopefully an iOS 6 update will eventually make this whole processing a little easier, without having to turn it on or off to delete tracks.
