NHL releases iPhone app at the end of the season

There’s a lot of things to love about the NHL, but there’s also a lot of things to absolutely hate about it as well. Being Canadian, I’ve been born with a predisposition to loving the game of hockey. It borders on an obsession, and when paired with my iPhone it should be like crack for Canadian Mac users. But, it’s not.

Much like everything else the NHL does “Web 2.0” the iPhone app is lacklustre, and half assed. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Check out their website, and the game highlights they put together.  Any kid with a computer  could do a better job.

For a league that has NFL and NBA envy, you’d think that they’d do a better job of releasing an innovative application.  Instead, the MLB app makes the NHL app look like it was designed in Gary Bettman’s mother’s basement.  Well done NHL.

Oh, and to make matters worse, the App is only available in the US store currently.  I’m sure Canadians really appreciate that.

What’s the App do you ask?  A whole lot of stats, and that’s about it.  You can get scores, standings, and player stats all served up beside an awesome rotating advertisement.  Luckily the App is free, so you won’t be too heart broken once you find out that you could get the same kind of information from your favourite news source online.

I’m probably coming off sounding like a jilted ex-lover, but my comments are really coming from a genuine place. I’m seriously disappointed that the NHL saw it fit to release this application.
