At midnight last night Apple’s iPhone 5 became available for pre-order and after just one hour Apple.com shipping times fell from one week to two weeks. This has to be some kind of record — it took 22 hours for the iPhone 4S and about 20 hours for the iPhone 4 to sell out of its pre-order stock.
So if you were one of the lucky ones who were able to pre-order your iPhone in the first hour or so, then you’ll be getting your brand new iPhone in just one week on September 21, the same day as the iPhone becomes available in stores. New orders of the iPhone 5 now won’t be shipping until the following week if you’re in the U.S., Canada, Australia, France, Germany, or the UK.
A sellout was obviously expected, but that it happened so quickly is a little surprising. It’s not clear whether Apple has actually sold more units than the previous iPhone 4S initial launch, or if Apple simply had less stock to begin with this time.
So if you haven’t ordered your iPhone 5 yet, you’re running out of options. Carriers like Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint are all accepting pre-orders as well, or you can wait until launch day and line up at your local Apple Store, which will be opening at 8AM on that day. You could also try Apple resellers like Best Buy or Walmart on September 21.
