ETSI Finally Agrees On New Nano-SIM Format

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has finally gotten around to approving a new standard for the nano-SIM, but the group isn’t revealing whose proposal made the grade this time around, only letting the public in on the fact that, “the new form factor will be 40 percent smaller than the current micro-SIM format — measuring 12.3mm wide by 8.8mm high, and 0.67mm thick”

As you know, Apple has been very vocal about the nano-SIM, and even submitted its own design for the SIM card. Apple even went as far as offering up free licensing for all patents that were required to create the nano-SIM card to its competitors. Additionally, Apple iterated on its design to alleviate any concerns that the ETSI had regarding its submission.

We won’t know for sure exactly what design was ratified as the new standard until the standard is made public by the ETSI.

We’ll let you know who won the ETSI war once we actually figure out who won. Apparently the ETSI is pretty tight-lipped about how they arrive at standards.
