CBS joining the HTML5 fight

Using HTML5 to stream video online got another supporter today — this time the vote of confidence came from CBS. The company has decided that by the time the 2010 fall lineup rolls around, CBS will be able to fully switch to HTML5 based video playback for their shows.

The key difference between CBS’s and ABC’s models for getting their video to users is that CBS has decided to forgo a dedicated iPad application, and instead focus on delivering their shows through their website. While it may not be the most favourably option for iPad users, it certainly makes the most sense for developers looking to  get their content on to multiple platforms.

I’d like to say that I’m looking forward to it, but being in Canada means being locked out from the video streams as per usual.
