Canabalt raises 25,000 for charity, goes open source

Just before the holidays we posted an article about a group of independent developers who decided that they’d put their apps on sale, and give 1/3 of the revenue to Child’s Play.

If you missed that post, Child’s Play is a charity that helps put toys and games in hospitals for children. Canabalt, one of the games that went on sale in the Indie iPhone Holiday Sale, managed to raise $25,350.25 for charity. That’s the results from just one of the five games that participated in the sale.  I’d be curious to know how the others faired during the sale.

In the spirit of giving back to the community, Semi Secret, the developers behind Canabalt. have decided to open up their code to the public and let people download the source code for Canabalt.

You’re now officially allowed to download and tinker with Canabalt, use their game engine and even make a buck or two from their hard work, so long as you’re not literally ripping off any part of the game specifically. That’s pretty cool on their part.

I’ve been saying this a lot lately, but Canabalt is definitely a must play game. If you don’t already have it, give it a download.
