Smartphones are taking over, and wireless bandwidth is being eaten up at an alarming rate, so what’s a wireless company to do? Cap your bandwidth, of course.
At least that’s what’s being reported today in the good ole’ US of A. Happy Memorial Day weekend, indeed. While you were all off enjoying barbecue and the company of family, AT&T somehow managed to cap off your upload speed. They probably hoped no one would notice, but alas, twitter’s abuzz.
It’s no surprise that AT&T is making a move to protect their network from the legion of iPhone 4 users who are trying to upload 720p video directly to YouTube over the wireless network. Up until recently, wireless users were spared caps with some reports of seeing upwards of 1500 mb/s in some areas. Now, these same areas are getting, on average, 100kbps.
It’s a sad day, but anyone who didn’t see this coming wasn’t around for the internet boom in the 90s. But, this could also be a short term fix for a long term problem, while AT&T updates major network hubs around the US.
