Apps Of The Week: Burner, Posts, Chronicle, And Olly Low Poly & The Zombie Tower

You’re going to hate me for saying it, but this weekend is the last weekend of the summer. Not summer according to the seasons, but summer holidays from school and a more easy-going summer work schedule peppered with plenty of long weekends and long summer nights.

My point? Enjoy it. Make the most of it and make the most of the apps we’re recommending to you this week.

The iPhone: Burner – Disposable Phone Numbers

Once in awhile, an app comes into your life that changes everything. The stars align and you believe in fate and true love again. That’s Burner and I. Consider that my Facebook relationship status changed and I’m not even going to try to be elusive and put “it’s complicated.” (What even is that anyway?)

Burner gives you alias phone numbers to use for incoming/outgoing phone calls and text messaging. You keep the number for as long as you need it and ‘burn’ it when you’re done. The app’s creator, Ad Hoc Labs, suggests it’s a great idea for dating, job searches, short-term projects and Craigslist transactions, Twitter, Tumblr, and other social media. It’s yours for $1.99.

Burner does use your cell phone minutes so pay attention to avoid a dirty cell phone bill. However, text messages through it DON’T use your SMS allowance. To get various Burner options, you will buy in-app credits. Choose from various packages based on minutes. Happy anonymity!

The iPad: Posts

You’re a blogger or WordPress user and you love your iPad, but sometimes blogging and the iPad just don’t play well together. Apple Design Award winning developer Pico has got you covered. Their new Posts app will make operating and managing your blog a breeze.

Posts is sporting a powerful built-in editor, comment manager and — what I think is super fantastic — the ability to work offline! There are those times when the Internet goes down or – God forbid – you find yourself in an area that doesn’t have Wi-Fi but you need to get work done. (I’m still amazed that North America is so far behind Europe when it comes to free Wi-Fi in most public areas.)

This functionality comes at a price though. Sacrifice a couple after work brewskis tonight because this app will run you $9.99. My recommendation? Choose productivity and grab a frosty glass of ice water instead. You’ll be useless on Monday morning trying to write with a hangover anyway.

The Mac: Chronicle – Bill Management

A big part about being an adult is accountability, especially accountability with your accounting. Even if you still live in your parent’s basement, you should pay attention because they’re eventually going to kick you out or pull a “Failure to Launch” move on you (It’s a movie with Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker).

Chronicle reminds you when your bills are due, even when you don’t have it running. Using the integrated browser, pay your bills online. It will even keep track of all confirmation numbers and receipts for proof of all your payments. If you’re extra forgetful, for an additional in-app purchase, you can be notified via email when it’s time to pony up the cash.

The app developer LittleFin is offering 30 percent off for a limited time to celebrate its release. You can grab it in now for $9.99. So, go get it.

Game Of The Week: Olly Low Poly & The Zombie Tower

I’m a big fan of games that have a story line, kinda like the good old Mario Brothers. However, I know other people just like a challenge and couldn’t be bothered knowing why the characters are battling in an alternate universe. Olly Low Poly and The Zombie Tower gives you the best of both worlds.

Vladimir Tomin has created a world where Olly’s friends have been kidnapped by evil zombies. You have the option to play the game in “Story Mode” or “Endless Tower” mode based on your gaming preferences. You lead Olly through the different levels using basic tap gestures to stop, go, kick and climb. The graphic layout is simple yet creative.

According to DesignCollector.net, this is Tomin’s first ever video game release. Congrats! I’m always up for a challenge and look forward to finishing the game. Try it yourself for $0.99 and let us (and Vladimir) know what you think in the comments section below.
