Apple Takes More Than 50% Of Smartphone Sales In U.S.

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech’s latest smartphone sales data shows that Apple has gotten its highest ever smartphone sales share in the U.S. with 53.3 percent in the past 12 weeks.  According to the data, the iPhone 5 really helped boost sales. In Europe, though, Android stayed at the top with highest shares of 61 percent of the market, which is up from 51.8 percent a year ago.

A global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, Dominic Sunnebo, said: “Apple has reached a major milestone in the US by passing the 50% share mark for the first time, with further gains expected to be made during December.”
Samsung, though, still holds the number one smartphone manufacturer spot in five major European countries, with 44.3 percent share in the last 12 weeks. Apple takes second place in this market with 25.3 percent share while HTC, Sony and Nokia shares are neck and neck for third.

Apple’s increase in market share sales comes at the expense of Canadian Blackberry manufacturer RIM, which has had a hard time retaining users. Hoping to make a comeback, RIM will be unveiling its new Blackberry 10 platform at an event on January 30th.
