Apple event could happen on September 7, 2011, may include iPhone 5

Could it be? Could Apple be preparing to finally unleash some new products in the upcoming weeks? According to Japanese website Kodawarisan, Apple is planning to hold their annual “iPod” event on Wednesday, September 7th.

We’ve put iPod in quotes because this time around it’s wildly speculated that Apple could be announcing the next generation iPhone at the event along with iPods. It would mark the first time that an iPhone was announced at the annual iPod event, so it’s a pretty big step away from the traditional spring announcement. Many, including AllThingsD and MacRumors, have suggested that the iPhone 5 could be announced in September, but that the phone might not actually ship until October.

A Telus employee has also been rumoured to have leaked that the company won’t begin selling the new phones until October in Canada as well. Usually Apple releases their new phones in phases, with a couple launch countries from the beginning, and then a host of other countries in a second phase. We would be surprised if that wasn’t the case this time since the new iPhone is already in huge demand, especially in Canada.

Customers who purchased the first available iPhone in Canada (the iPhone 3G), and signed up for a three year contract will have their contracts expiring sometime in September, putting a lot of people back in the running for new phones.

We’ll keep you posted if we hear more on this front over the course of the week.
