NYC to get iPads and Square system in yellow cabs

New York City’s Taxi and Limousine Commission has approved a pilot program to put iPads and Square in a number of taxis around town. Riders will be able to not only pay by credit card using Square’s service, but they’ll now also be able to get receipts emailed or texted to their phones before exiting the cab.

The move is being made in an attempt to not only provide better service for riders, but also provide a more safe working environment for the cab drivers, who would no longer have to deal with as much cash as credit card payments would increase.

Pretty nifty. I wish my home town would move into the new millennium and make a similar move. I guess that would mean Square would have to be available in Canada, which it’s not. Dare to dream.
