For those who are a little late catching up on the news, Apple finally announced the much anticipated iPad mini at yesterday’s media event. According to Apple, it’s not just the smallest iPad yet, but it’s also the smartest and can detect unintentional touches around the outer edges of the screen.
One of the biggest differences between the iPad mini and the regular iPad, aside from the obvious size difference, is the thinner bezel surrounding the screen. While it makes for more screen space on the device, it does make it a little more challenging to hold it without accidentally tapping something on the touchscreen by accident. Apple has already thought this issue through and here’s why it’s the smartest iPad yet:
“iPad mini is small. But when you use it, it doesn’t feel small. That’s because it’s designed to give you the maximum amount of screen in the minimum amount of space. To achieve that, we had to rethink the relationship between the screen and the overall shape of the product. iPad has symmetrical bezels around all of its edges. But for iPad mini, we reduced the width of the bezels on two sides of the display. So although the screen is smaller, it’s even more prominent. Rethinking the screen meant we also had to rethink the software behind it. iPad mini intelligently recognizes whether your thumb is simply resting on the display or whether you’re intentionally interacting with it. It’s the kind of detail you’ll notice — by not noticing it. And it’s a great example of how Apple hardware and software work together to give you the best experience possible.”
So in short, you don’t have to worry about accidentally touching the edges of the screen when you’re holding the iPad mini. That actually sounds pretty cool and it will be interesting to see if this technology works as well as Apple says it will.
