Apple fans’ hearts were broken today when the Apple Store updated the shipping date for 3G iPads. Until today, the 3G iPad was showing “late April” as the ship date. That has been amended to “ships by May 7.”
Nevertheless, many iPad 3G buyers, after checking their Apple Store accounts, have noted that their ship date is still showing as “ships late April.” Some lucky customers received the following email this morning from Apple indicating that their 3G iPads will still ship in late April:

We would like to confirm that your order will be shipped in late April as communicated at the time you placed your order. You will receive a confirmation notice when your order has shipped.

So, the May 7th date appears to be for those who order 3G iPads now, rather than for those who pre-ordered earlier. An audible sigh of relief can be heard across the US, though international customers will continue to weep until late May.
