To Combat The iPad Mini-effect, Google Drops The Price On The Nexus 7

Just how low can the Googles and Amazons of the world go to solidify their place in the iPad market? With the iPad mini coming in at $329.00, Apple’s looking to clean up and dominate the “small” tablet market. Some in the press were disappointed with the $329.00 price tag for the iPad mini because it didn’t compete well with the other small tablets on the market. Today those same journalists will be just a little more pissed — Google has dropped the price of the Nexus 7 to $199 for the 16 GB version, and rumors are circulating that the 8GB version could also drop by as much as $100.00.

Apple’s not planning on competing on the price with its competition (they never really have either), but that doesn’t mean that Google won’t try to dominate the market by offering cheap alternatives to the iPad. There are two very different models at play from Google and Apple. One company wants to win the price war, and the other company wants to win the quality war. The only thing left to say at this point is … what’s happening with the “Ultrabook” war? There’s probably some parallels to be drawn between that market and the tablet market at this point.
