Digitimes tracks down iPad 2 backlighting supplier

Digitimes has put the iPad 2 OLED display rumors to rest today by announcing that Coretronic will be creating backlighting units for the iPad 2.

A lot of people were hoping Apple would include AMOLED displays in their upcoming iPad 2 models, but it’s starting to look like the screen will be similar to the one currently in the original iPad.  Digitimes has discovered that Coretronic will be shipping the backlighting units (BLU) to LG Display and Chimei for inclusion in the iPad displays.

Another point of interest in the Digitimes article is that Coretronics is expecting to ship the parts throughout the first quarter (April), which would put the release date around the same time as the original iPad.

There you have it, it’s starting to look like the iPad 2 announcement could come as early as January.

If you’re not sure what a Backlighting Unit is the picture in the post is an offering from Phlox.  It’s not the ones that will be in the iPad, but it’s likely similar.

Essentially, it’s a giant light.
