DigiTimes: No AMOLED in iPad 2 because of supply problems

Remember how long it took to get the iPhone 4 into the hands of consumers? Apparently if Apple were to implement AMOLED panels into the iPad 2, there would likely be similar problems. Supply constraints, according to DigiTimes, is the number one reason why the iPad 2 will ship without AMOLED.

There’s also some indication that AMOLED panels in the 7 to 11-inch panel size is still not economically viable for Apple. If Apple’s hoping to maintain a sizeable price difference between themselves and their competitors, adding AMOLED screens could make it difficult to keep that competitive advantage.

DigiTimes reports,

With backlight unit (BLU) makers set to be suppliers for the second generation of iPad, AMOLED will still be unable to enter Apple’s supply chain. Panel makers have noted that a major reason for Apple to overlook AMOLED for iPads is insufficient supplies.

After all the supply fuss this summer with the iPhone 4, I seriously doubt those waiting for the iPad 2 would be happy with another short supply.
